Testing

We offer unique testing. Strain gauging, acoustic emission testing, unique setups.

Strain Gauging

Strain gauges measure the strain (which can be converted to stress) at the surface of a part where they are installed. There are many applications for strain gauges and you unknowingly make use of them on a regular basis. They can be used in tools, for measurement of loading. Or design validation by physically measuring an area of high stress, as determined by a finite element analysis (FEA). If you can figure out a way to fix a strain gauge where you want to measure, then the application limits are your imagination.

Acoustic Emission Testing

Another unique test method is using acoustic emission (AE) detection to listen for emissions from crack or leaks. AE testing is used to LOCATE an ACTIVE crack; it cannot size indications and it cannot identify cracks that are not actively growing. It is particularly useful for determining if a tank or vessel is OK to continue in service when it is difficult to inspect, due to insulation, temperature, or geometry. Its use is not limited to tanks and vessels and if you think you may have an application, reach out. An application that I am eager to explore is listening for hydrogen cracking in in-service welds.

Unique Loading

We have experience with load cells and are willing to try different kinds of loading situations. We also can employ digital image correlation (DIC) to measure strain on parts of complex geometry. If you have a unique test that you would like to complete, we can either help in Calgary or in our US labs.
