Welding Engineering

I would love to work with you on a solution to your welding project. I can write a welding procedure specification (WPS) that will probably be filed away in a binder, but I would prefer to do more.

New Technology

I strive to stay up to speed on the latest technology for welding shops. Sometimes this means only having a theoretical knowledge without the practical experience, but in those situations, I will spend extra effort to make sure I know the theoretical.

Doing something new always involves risk and surprises, but it often brings rewards. If you are interested in implementing something new into your shop, contact me and I would be happy to work with you to provide guidance and recommendations, from selecting the right piece of equipment to making sure it meets the code requirements for you application.

Some of the latest technology that shops are considering are welding cobots, handheld laser welding, and additive manufacturing.

Welding Guidelines

Going through the process of qualifying a WPS, knowing it will never be looked at again, is the bane of my career. For many applications, a good welder knows how to weld the joint and the material is highly weldable and doesn't require any special considerations. I think the industry, as a whole, could do better implementing a more robust prequalified system. Maybe one day I will spearhead that effort.

I prefer to write welding guidelines, like the outline shown. A welding guideline is written to be practically useful and may be a stand-alone document or may be used to support a qualified WPS. A guideline is meant for specific applications and is not to be as general as a typical WPS. Often, I find guidelines are requested when there is a repair weld needed. Something broke, so everyone is aware that if it isn't repaired properly, it will probably break again.

Guidelines can be written quite quickly, so your critical repair can be completed much faster than the  qualification process of a WPS.

CWB Welding Engineer

Starting the CWB's certification process for structural welding fabricators can be a challenging step. I am happy to assist shops figure out what they need and help the process go smoothly. I offer services as a retained welding engineer for shops seeking Division 2 certification, or for assistance with developing welding procedure datasheets (WPDS) for Division 3 fabricators.
